historical-nonfiction:

The gaung paung is the standard head covering of the diverse tribes of Burma and northern Thailand. It is more or less a turban and comes in four main designs. Each ethnic group has its own way of wearing the Gaungpaung upon which they can be identified, though their usage declined after British colonizaton — today they are mainly worn at special occasions such as weddings and religious ceremonies.
